Why Birds Can Sit on Power Lines Without Getting Shocked

You’ve probably seen birds sitting on power lines and wondered, “Why don’t they get shocked?” Here’s the answer to that common electrical mystery.
No Grounding, No Shock
Birds don’t get shocked because they’re not grounded. Electricity always flows through the path of least resistance, and since the bird’s body doesn’t complete a circuit to the ground, the electricity keeps moving through the wire. If a bird were to touch both the wire and a grounded object (like a pole), it would complete the circuit and get shocked.
Power Line Voltage Matters
Power lines carry very high voltages, but because the bird is sitting on just one wire, the voltage difference across the bird’s body is so small that electricity doesn’t flow through it.
This is why it’s crucial for humans to never touch a power line—we could easily become grounded and receive a dangerous shock!
